Dear school board members,
Thank you for getting the grant for our school and making it our dream school. Thank you for our technology and getting us online classes. We know the meetings are long and stressful but that's what makes our town so strong. Thanks for trying to get us back into sports. Thank you for reviewing expenses/budget and how the money is spent and where it is spent, and creating or updating policies for the school district.
Sincerely,

Julesburg High School students join the Sterling High School’s Student Leadership Advisory Council to learn more about the Rural Kids Connect Program. This new program connects rural students across the state to learn more about life in other rural schools and explore ways to make their worlds a better place. Schools in attendance this evening included Meeker, Hi-Plains, Cheyenne Wells, Byers, Stratton, Elizabeth, Valley, Caliche, Walsh and Julesburg High School.

Thank You
Thank you school board members for helping the Julesburg school out. You have helped us get our grant for the new school. With the new school you have thought of ideas for where the school should be and how you are going to design it. Thank you for letting us use Macbooks everyday at school so we can get the education we need. Thank you for the remodeling of the bathroom and locker rooms. It has helped us out a lot throughout the school year and sports season and for helping the school football team have a 2020 highschool season. Without your help to pass sports the high school football team would not have gotten their 6th Championship.

Joe Stan entered the Air Force in January of 1971; during the Vietnam War. He was a veterinary technician that took care of animals. Part of Mr. Stan’s job was to take care of dogs and run lab tests. In honor of Veteran's Day, the Junior High School Career jExplorations class interviewed Veteran Army Captain Teresa Howes under the guidance of Mrs. Monette . On Wednesday, November 11th at 2 pm, please join the students and staff of Julesburg School District on Cedar Street for a reverse parade honoring our local Veterans.
Teresa Howes joined the army in 1986. Her parents encouraged her to join. Mrs. Howes is an experiential and life-long learner, so the military helped her pursue a good education and vocational experience. She knew the army would provide discipline and structure and she wanted to be a part of something greater than herself.
Teresa Howes had a love/hate relationship with boot camp. She learned field first aid, conduct reconnaissance, how to properly conduct herself under immense physical and mental stress, how to carry a rucksack, how to assemble/disassemble/ clean and fire an M16 rifle, how to polish her combat boots, clean latrines, polish and buff floors, take orders, make recommendations, know her chain of command, know and perform her first general order, take care of her squad members, run 2 miles under 16 minutes, correctly pump out push-ups and sit-ups under 2 minutes, as well as living and surviving simply in very complex and high risk situations. Boot camp held many important experiences.
While in the military, Mrs. Howes held several different ranks. These include Private, Private First Class, Specialist, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Officer Candidate, Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant and Captain. She also served in many different areas including Cheyenne, Wyoming and Baltimore, Maryland. She trained at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana; Camp Guernsey, Wyoming; Fort Huachuca, Arizona; Boise, Idaho; Fort Lewis Washington,Camp Ethan Allen Vermont; Fort Polk, Louisiana; Tooele Army Depot, Utah; Schofield Barracks, and 25th Infantry Division Honolulu Hawaii. She deployed to Neu Ulm, Germany when the Berlin Wall came down and Communism came to an end, she deployed to the Middle East, Kuwait to include: Camp Doha Kuwait, Camp Arifjan Kuwait, and Camp Patriot Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Teresa Howes served in both the Army and the National Guard. She “held many hats” during her 21 years of service. She trained to be prepared to respond to natural disasters and to go to war. This means that she signed a contract, took an oath to experience and learn how to be a Soldier, a photojournalist, broadcast journalist, public affairs officer, personnel officer, commander, team leader, liaison officer, and assistant master facilities planner and emergency management public affairs officer.
When asked, “What was one of the scariest things that happened while you were in the National Guard,” Teresa responded, “After returning from war in 2004, my health was not the same. I recall one morning in 2006, I had been up all night sweating, coughing with a severe sore throat, hard time breathing, and I was scheduled to lead a unit in a training convoy to Camp Guernsey 90 miles. I called my first sergeant to tell him he was in charge because I could not lead the unit. I was afraid of judgment by my Soldiers and my peers, yet I was not thinking well and I did not want to spread my germs and I really needed medical attention. It was a hard decision to take care of myself (or place myself first at that time) when I was ultimately and in reality taking care of everyone by doing the right thing. Sometimes leadership is realizing one is not in a position to lead and trusting someone else to take over, especially when Soldiers' lives are at stake.”
Teresa Howes enjoyed being in the Army. She earned 15 medals and service ribbons. Her most memorable ones include the Humanitarian Service Medal for deploying to forest fires in Yellowstone, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal and the Army Meritorious Service Medal during peacetime and wartime.
Teresa Howes concluded by sharing that her career in the Army gave her a great deal of opportunities to work hard, learn from others, train others, travel, be in exceptional physical condition and be part of a team. Teresa stated that, “Going to war and returning from war continues to be one of the most difficult and fascinating challenges in my life.”
Thank you for your service Mrs. Howes!

Having fun with our fabulous 4th graders! Students have been learning to recognize that an object in motion always changes position. They have also been learning that an object in motion may change its direction. What better place to learn that than on the playground! While at recess, students had to answer how something changes direction and why. Fun stuff!

JHS students in Life Skills are working in groups to learn, understand, and teach their peers about the first compenent of Social Emotional Learning. Self-Awareness is the ability to accurately recognize one's own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence our behavior. They went on to share the benefits of Self-Awareness.

JSD Community...please help keep our school clean and safe! We cleaned up a number of items on our playground this morning including glass that had been shattered into our sand court. We have thoroughly cleaned this but we need help from the community in keeping our playground safe and clean for our children. Thank you for your help!

JHS Sophomores are working on identifying their life centers. They are to make a list about what's important in their life right now. Does it revolve around school? friends? sports?
Then ask themselves, "What matters most to me?" "What do I obsess about?" "What drives me?"
The answers are their life centers. If there is too much emphasis in one area, they will learn that they need more balance in their lives.

Austin Buchholz and Ryker Craven work together on their Domestication Timeline in Livestock & Poultry I class. This activity included finding the classification, the place and period of time each animal was domesticated by humans, major dates in the history of domestication in the United States, and the key functions of animals by humans for cattle, goats, horses, poultry, swine, and sheep.

The forensic science class practiced their crime scene skills by searching for evidence hidden in the lawn. They also found evidence in a classroom, the library, and the gym.

JHS Seniors in Life Skills converse with one another as they work on adjectives to describe themselves to convince an employer why they should be the one hired for a job. How you are viewed by others will also determine what is mentioned in your letters of recommendation for employment as well as scholarships.

The Julesburg Early Education Center Preschool received some extremely exciting news this week. The William Stretesky Foundation has graciously awarded us a grant to support the tuition needs of our families for their children to attend our preschool. We cannot thank the foundation enough for their support of our children and their education.

Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) is still available in Colorado!
Pandemic EBT, or P-EBT, provides families with children eligible for free or reduced-price school meals and attend a school participating in the National School Lunch Program with funds to help purchase food. This benefit is being distributed because students missed essential meals while schools were closed due to the pandemic this spring. Families can receive up to $279 per eligible child to supplement their food budget, regardless of immigration status.
Households that were receiving SNAP during the months of March, April, and May may not need to take any action; their P-EBT benefits may have automatically been loaded onto the EBT card they already have. Families with eligible children who did not receive SNAP during those months or who did not receive the automatic payment need to apply online to receive this benefit. The deadline to apply is September 23rd. Visit coloradopeak.force.com/PEBT to learn more and apply for P-EBT today! Please contact your child's school if you need another copy of your child's state student ID.

Attention Julesburg families with children ages one to 18! The USDA announced that the Summer Food Service Program can continue to operate this fall while school is in session through as late as December 31, 2020 dependent on available funding. Parents/guardians will be able to pick up a free breakfast and lunch daily for their child(ren) at Julesburg Elementary School at 10:45 a.m. Monday through Friday beginning Tuesday, September 8th. At the time of pick-up, you will need to remain in your vehicle and a staff member will bring the meal to your car. Good evening JES Parents/Guardians! I just wanted to congratulate our students and families for a terrific first day back! The day went very smoothly considering all of the changes that took place this year. It was so wonderful to see our students again. Please click on the link below to see the Julesburg Elementary School Student/Parent Handbook. This is our general school handbook so it does not necessarily reflect the changes we made this year to best meet the health and safety requirements of our students and staff. Those changes include, the grab and go breakfast at the end of the day for the next morning, lunch in the classroom, arrival and dismissal procedures, curriculum, social distancing, etc. Those changes were listed in the back-to-school letter that was sent to all parents a couple of weeks ago. If you would like a hard copy of this handbook and/or the back-to-school letter, please email Rhonda Palic at palic_rh@julesburg.org or call the elementary school at 970-474-3364 to request a copy. Thank you again for preparing your children for a terrific first day back.

August 17, 2020
Dear Julesburg Jr./Sr. High School Parents and Students,
As a JHS graduate, I am both honored and excited to be your new 7-12 Principal. My parents are Randy and Susan. I have two siblings. Kerri lives in McCook with her husband, Andy and their three children. Matthew, and his wife, Anna, live in Loveland. They have three children. My wife, Alissa, will be working as our Online/Ag Learning Facilitator and as the Head Coach for the High School Volleyball team. We have five children. Our oldest, Dylan will be a freshman at Regis University. Jensen will be a sophomore. Tate is entering the 7th grade. Addison will be a 5th grader and our youngest, Jace, is excited about 2nd grade.
We are excited to announce the arrival of two new teachers. Ms. Brianne Foreman taught Social Studies in the Denver metro area. Our new English teacher, Mr. Peyman Javadi is an experienced teacher that has been approved to teach College English and Public Speaking to JHS students through NJC. I am excited for these two new teachers to join our outstanding returning staff members.
While this school year will be different from school years in the past, the School Board and Administrative team have been working hard to ensure students can safely return. Here are some of the changes for the upcoming school year:
· The first day of school will begin with a virtual assembly during first period.
· Students who want a school breakfast will be given one after school for the next day.
· Students will enter the school at 8 am through the exterior door of their first period class.
· 7-12 students may eat at the lunch room or stay at the high school for a grab-and-go style lunch. Social distancing requirements will be enforced. Students will be allowed to leave campus for lunch.
· Since it is impossible to maintain social distancing, lockers will not be issued. Students will take their supplies with them to each class. Teachers may have designated areas for students to leave supplies.
· Masks will be recommended, unless required by the Governor’s Executive Order.
· Students will not be allowed to congregate while on school property.
· Good hygiene is recommended. Students should wash their hands or use sanitizer regularly.
· Traffic during passing periods will be limited to one-way traffic. Signs will be posted.
· Restroom usage will be regulated to make sure there are not too many students using the bathrooms at the same time due to small space limitations in the restrooms.
· Students need to bring their own water and water bottles from home. There is one water bottle filing station located in the gym that students may use to fill their water bottle throughout the day.
· Parents are encouraged to take their child’s temperature before sending their student to school. If the child has a fever or is exhibiting unexplained COVID-19 symptoms, then the child must stay home.
· If a student becomes ill at school, he/she will be sent to a quarantine room until a parent or guardian can come to school to pick the student up.
Please keep in mind, your child’s health and well-being were at the forefront of every decision that was made. On a personal note, I can’t wait to introduce myself and my family to those of you who don’t already know us. If I can be of any assistance to you, please email me or call me at (970) 474-3364.
Sincerely,
Mr. Ryan Renquist

What Families Can Do During the COVID-19 Pandemic
● Send your child to school with a clean mask daily. (if required by the Executive Order of the Governor)● Understand that these guidelines are determined by health, educational and community professionals in an effort to care for your child, considering the physical environment, time spent in school, and the potential risk to the health of our students, staff and families. ● Take family members' temperatures twice daily. If temperature reaches 99.4, keep your child home for 48 hours, with 24 hours of no temperature without fever reducing medication. ○ Keep your child home if they have an unexplained fever, cough, cold or flu symptoms, and have them return only when these symptoms have subsided for 48 hours, with 24 hours of no temperature without aid of fever reducing medication. ● Create a family plan: ○ In case your child is sent home from school/bus due to high temperature or is required to be quarantined or isolated. ○ In the event schools close for a 14-day quarantine. ● Talk to your child about changes they may notice at school, reinforcing that these measures are in place to preserve their health, and the health of those around them. ● As always, please reinforce the importance of respecting the responsibility of teachers and staff to maintain order in the classroom, the hallway, and other campus areas. ● Prepare to adapt to change. 2 ○ From March 13, 2020 to today, we know that things evolve quickly, and schedule modifications and/or closures may be unavoidable. ● Understand that we are here to assist you with your child’s educational needs. ● Know that you as a guardian and parent have the right to keep your child home at any time as you assess risk as it relates to your family.

Dear Julesburg School District Families,
After months of careful planning, we are ready and eager to begin school in-person with our students on Monday, August 31st!
We have and continue to work tirelessly to develop academic and operational plans that will allow us to be together safely in-person while at school.
Our teachers are working diligently to plan and implement high quality in-person learning for our students that can be delivered in a combination of in-person and asynchronous methods that will enable our students to have high quality learning experiences both in school and outside of school if we need to transition to a remote teaching/learning environment.
It is important for us all to take the personal responsibility to mitigate the risks of transmitting the COVID-19 virus by following the health measures outlined in the Julesburg School District Restart Plan. The most important thing we ALL can do to protect each other is to conduct daily temperature checks, be mindful of COVID-19 symptoms and quickly have those symptoms evaluated by a doctor before potentially sharing them with others.
School operations, teaching and learning will indeed be a little different this year, but we are confident that by following some common sense risk mitigation strategies, we can safely return to a more “normal” school year.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

It's Mental Health Monday! Coronavirus is taking a toll on many of us, students and adults, alike. This article talks about how you can take care of your mental health in a time of uncertainty.

The Julesburg School District honors the service and sacrifice of our men and women currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. We would like to especially recognize two of our very own Class of 2020 Graduating Seniors Ronnie Westerbuhr and Sirissa Casady who will be serving in the United States Army!

The Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) Board has recommended to the State Board of Education that the Julesburg School District's grant application to build a new $40 Million PK-12 School be awarded and funded by either cash or lease/purchase financing under the current $160M appropriation. With potential cuts to that appropriation proposed in the delayed legislative session, the Julesburg School District's new school project may move to being the first "backup" project if $30M or more is cut from the current $160M BEST Grant funding appropriation.

Good morning! It’s Mental Health Monday! Use this handout to help discuss mental health in your home. Please always feel free to reach out.

Notice of Virtual School Board Meeting
Julesburg School District
Thursday, April 23rd @ 5:15 p.m.
Per the Governor’s Executive Order, suspending in-person learning in public and private schools across the state for the remainder of the current school year and to maintain compliance with the current stay at home order, The Julesburg Board of Education will be conducting a special meeting at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 23rd. The meeting will be conducted entirely via videoconferencing. The public can attend the meeting telephonically and hear the discussion at the meeting by dialing (701) 802-5410 and entering Access Code 250173#.
Agenda:
Updates/discussion related to COVID-19

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
The Governor’s most recent Executive Order now requires all schools to remain closed to in-person learning for the remainder of the current school year. The Julesburg School District will continue to provide on-line learning and meals to our students through May 22nd of the current school year.
In conjunction with this Executive Order, all remaining in-person school and athletic events/activities are cancelled and all school facilities will remain closed through the remainder of the current school year.
At some point this summer, we are hopeful that we will be allowed to host an in-person traditional graduation ceremony to honor the Class of 2020 and resume other traditional summer time school and athletic related activities.
As you are aware, this is an ever changing situation and we will continue to communicate as state, local and health agencies keep us informed of new public health safety guidelines. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or need further assistance with any other challenges you may facing as a result of this crisis.
Shawn Ehnes
Superintendent
Julesburg School District Re-1

The freshmen class worked in a live session during science this morning discussing what they know, how they feel, and questions they have about COVID-19. We also began our discussion about using reliable sources to answer questions about the virus and being critical of information! Loving that I get to interact with the students even from a distance!

(Part 2/2) Just before spring break, our high school girls participated in the 1st Sonia Kovalevksy Day at Colorado State University. At this event, young women were given the opportunity to explore what mathematics can offer in a different format than a traditional classroom setting. The students learned about ongoing research in mathematics and took part in fun workshops like the games of SET and Hackenbush, the probability involved in winning rock-paper-scissors and Let’s Make a Deal (Monty Hall), and cryptography where they decoded hidden messages.

This matched up well with both our social studies standards and our main story in reading. Thank you again Mr. Mayor for coming to our class and all you do for our town.

Ever wonder what goes on in an after-school teacher (staff) meeting? Here, the JES Teacher Impact Teams are using a student work analysis protocol to determine where students need more support and enrichment along with discussing ideas for adjusting instructional practice with other teachers. This protocol helps teachers better understand how students experience the tasks given and how the grade level learning intentions are reflected in student responses.

Team Bonin from Domesti-PUPS spent the morning visiting students at the Julesburg High School. Callie, the therapy dog, and her handler, Eileen are certified to provide mental and emotional therapy to those in need. An inherent trait in humans is the need for attachment to others. Team Bonin provided that attachment! When a student looks at a dog, strokes her and talks to her, their blood pressure goes down, their temperature decreases and the sense of well-being increases. Callie was even able to detect when the student or teacher needed a hug!

American Red Cross Student Blood Drive occuring today at Julesburg High School from 11:30 - 5:30. Walk-In welcomed and needed!!!

Amazing job to our JES Students on another great performance. Thank you to everyone who attended to support our students and our music program.
