Excellent Elementary Ecosystems! We had a blast on our first official afternoon of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Club at JES. Fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Auernhamer opened the afternoon with a quick mini lesson on ecosystems. Students then got the opportunity to create their own ecosystem that even included a fish! A special thank you goes out to our high school students for assisting us with this project. We could not have done it without you. Also, thank you to JES Staff who also made this first afternoon possible. Next week, we will celebrate March Madness with building a basketball shooter!

Shake! Rattle! Roll! 2nd graders are learning all about how the earth changes quickly and slowly over time, by erosion, wind and weather. Students used graham crackers and whipped topping to simulate what happens in an earthquake!

Second graders bounced basketballs to the beat in music class. Students practiced finding the beat, followed different rhythms, and worked on their coordination all while having fun!

Kaitlyn DeWerff of Barton Community College presented to the JHS Sophomore Life Skills Class and together they worked on what type of income they would have if they chose to graduate high school going directly into the work force, obtaining an Associate’s Degree, or obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree. Each student was provided an envelope of money based on their level of education. Then each had to figure their monthly expenses to include housing, utilities, fuel, car payments and insurance, food, health insurance, savings, personal spending, entertainment, cell phone expenses, and recreation. Once it was determined what they owed for their monthly expenses, they then rolled their fate. Some were then faced with unexpected layoffs for a determined amount of time or unexpected medical expenses. The reality of what they did and didn’t have monetarily at the end of the month was an authentic life experience!!

A.R.E.A. count the squares inside-hey! That’s the rhyme second grade learned to memorize how to find the area of shapes during intervention time. They then practiced with a partner finding the area by covering objects with inch squares. Thank you Mrs. Hoschouer for sharing Standout math to expand our knowledge with quick, easy to learn rhymes that students can remember for a lifetime!
