In honor of Veteran's Day, the Junior High School Career Explorations class interviewed Air Force Veteran Staff Sergeant Joe Stan under the guidance of Mrs. Monette . On Wednesday, November 11th at 2 pm, please join the students and staff of Julesburg School District on Cedar Street for a reverse parade honoring our local Veterans. Joe Stan entered the Air Force in January of 1971; during the Vietnam War. He was a veterinary technician that took care of animals. Part of Mr. Stan’s job was to take care of dogs and run lab tests. He worked in Cambodia keeping soldiers healthy by keeping them from getting animal diseases such as rabies. Mr. Stan also worked at the Okinawa Air Force base. The vet techs had around 800 trained dogs and several horses to take care of. The dogs, mostly German Shepherds, were important for guarding bombers, guarding the base, carrying messages and sniffing out bombs. During his time in the military, Mr. Stan earned awards including the Service Award and Marksmanship Award. Mr. Stan, we thank you for your service!

https://youtu.be/zWiALrl0gVs In honor of Veteran's Day, the Junior High School Career jExplorations class interviewed Veteran Army Captain Teresa Howes under the guidance of Mrs. Monette . On Wednesday, November 11th at 2 pm, please join the students and staff of Julesburg School District on Cedar Street for a reverse parade honoring our local Veterans. Teresa Howes joined the army in 1986. Her parents encouraged her to join. Mrs. Howes is an experiential and life-long learner, so the military helped her pursue a good education and vocational experience. She knew the army would provide discipline and structure and she wanted to be a part of something greater than herself. Teresa Howes had a love/hate relationship with boot camp. She learned field first aid, conduct reconnaissance, how to properly conduct herself under immense physical and mental stress, how to carry a rucksack, how to assemble/disassemble/ clean and fire an M16 rifle, how to polish her combat boots, clean latrines, polish and buff floors, take orders, make recommendations, know her chain of command, know and perform her first general order, take care of her squad members, run 2 miles under 16 minutes, correctly pump out push-ups and sit-ups under 2 minutes, as well as living and surviving simply in very complex and high risk situations. Boot camp held many important experiences. While in the military, Mrs. Howes held several different ranks. These include Private, Private First Class, Specialist, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Officer Candidate, Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant and Captain. She also served in many different areas including Cheyenne, Wyoming and Baltimore, Maryland. She trained at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana; Camp Guernsey, Wyoming; Fort Huachuca, Arizona; Boise, Idaho; Fort Lewis Washington,Camp Ethan Allen Vermont; Fort Polk, Louisiana; Tooele Army Depot, Utah; Schofield Barracks, and 25th Infantry Division Honolulu Hawaii. She deployed to Neu Ulm, Germany when the Berlin Wall came down and Communism came to an end, she deployed to the Middle East, Kuwait to include: Camp Doha Kuwait, Camp Arifjan Kuwait, and Camp Patriot Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Teresa Howes served in both the Army and the National Guard. She “held many hats” during her 21 years of service. She trained to be prepared to respond to natural disasters and to go to war. This means that she signed a contract, took an oath to experience and learn how to be a Soldier, a photojournalist, broadcast journalist, public affairs officer, personnel officer, commander, team leader, liaison officer, and assistant master facilities planner and emergency management public affairs officer. When asked, “What was one of the scariest things that happened while you were in the National Guard,” Teresa responded, “After returning from war in 2004, my health was not the same. I recall one morning in 2006, I had been up all night sweating, coughing with a severe sore throat, hard time breathing, and I was scheduled to lead a unit in a training convoy to Camp Guernsey 90 miles. I called my first sergeant to tell him he was in charge because I could not lead the unit. I was afraid of judgment by my Soldiers and my peers, yet I was not thinking well and I did not want to spread my germs and I really needed medical attention. It was a hard decision to take care of myself (or place myself first at that time) when I was ultimately and in reality taking care of everyone by doing the right thing. Sometimes leadership is realizing one is not in a position to lead and trusting someone else to take over, especially when Soldiers' lives are at stake.” Teresa Howes enjoyed being in the Army. She earned 15 medals and service ribbons. Her most memorable ones include the Humanitarian Service Medal for deploying to forest fires in Yellowstone, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal and the Army Meritorious Service Medal during peacetime and wartime. Teresa Howes concluded by sharing that her career in the Army gave her a great deal of opportunities to work hard, learn from others, train others, travel, be in exceptional physical condition and be part of a team. Teresa stated that, “Going to war and returning from war continues to be one of the most difficult and fascinating challenges in my life.” Thank you for your service Mrs. Howes!
